THE "4TH" BATTALION__Anti-Tank Company

DATE CP Town Anti-Tank Company
Feb. 23 HERBORN,
   LUXEMBOURG

Dig in our 57s, stick to them day and night, ready for anything German on wheels; snow, slush, mud--we're in the middle of it; 2nd platoon guns getting daily serenade of 88s with approaching roads under direct enemy observation. Support 417th crossing with direct fire.

Feb. 24 FERSCHWEILER,
   GERMANY

Roll across the Sauer onto German soil; 88s plaster town already reduced to rubble by our shelling; 57s support Prüm crossing; Mine platooners carry 40 pounds of mines plus equipment in crossing with riflemen to lay road blocks.

Feb. 26  HOLSTHUM

CP and kitchen set up among dead cattle, dogs, horses after attack. Guns out ahead protecting flanks in attack on Alsdorf.

Feb. 27  ALSDORF

Hit for CP cellar half an hour after setting up--88s and mortars. Guns out in front toward Gilzem.

Feb. 27-
Mar.  1
GILZEM

Gun crews get Heinie bunkers for foxholes; Mine platoon still marching with riflemen.

Mar.  2  WELSCHBILLIG

More ruins, but CP has hotel and real bathroom! Guns in position, but billets for men not on gun--a novelty.

Mar. 3  IDESHEIM

Get set for Kyll crossing; it's assembly area, but Kraut around; one knocked at our door to surrender.

Mar.   4 KYLL

Wierd ride down hairpin-turns of steep Kyll bluff to pitch black-ness, rain and roaring river. 60 of our men carry rations and ammo to 2nd Bn. across Kyll up 60-degree slope cross-country for ten miles; backbreaking, but brought back 150 prisoners.

Mar.   6  PREIST CP gets roofless house, screaming meemies; 1st platoon in Orenhofen.
Mar. 8  HERFORST

Town packed with troops; shared CP with 302nd FA; guns out defending against mechanized attack; none developed.

Mar. 9  NIEDERKAIL

Artillery, tanks, TDs, field guns roar through main drag for hours; we wait for orders to move out.

Mar. 10  WITTLICH

Came in at night, didn't realize the size of this town--it's the first big one. 10th Armored just ahead. We get orders to move to the Moselle.

Mar. 13  PLATTEN

Company rotates in billets in town, others putting down HE barrage on towns across the river. We make big experiment: mount guns on 2= ton trucks, make them self-propelled. Try out 70 rounds on first gun mounted. It works. Mine Platoon out nightly clearing roads on both sides of Moselle.

Mar. 21  DÖRREBACH

We're on the Rhine! Mine platoon clears roads along the river; hit hard at towns on far bank.

Mar. 27  EMMELSHAUSEN

Bridge, tunnel, road guarding mission; wild rumors of Patton's armor tearing to Berlin; expect to cross the Rhine soon.

Mar. 28  PFALZFELD

3rd platoon returns from Koblenz mission with 1st battalion; we're set to cross the Rhine at St. Goar.

Mar. 30  ESCH

First job is to screen town, then through the woods screening back toward the Rhine. Bring in many Kraut, two officers.

Apr. 3  LENDERSCHEID  Overnight stop on long motor move; German hinterland.
Apr. 4  MELSUNGEN  Jump-off for move on clearing mission; we are rear guard for regiment.
Apr. 5  VOCKERODE

This is "blitzkrieg" style; another overnight stop after clearing up to Wehre river. 1st platoon shot up town with 57s to capture big supply train.

Apr.  6  LANGENSALZA

Snipers still active when CP moved in ahead of Regimental; 57s supporting 1st and 2nd Bns. east of city; Mine platoon guarding warehouses of food, army supplies, champagne, brandy! Luftwaffe makes bow.

Apr. 10  HERBSLEBEN

Three gun platoons aid in capturing 13 towns; try out marching 57 mm fire with trucks moving backwards blasting at towns; trouble when two gun trucks and crews dive into river when shelled bridge collapses.

Apr. 12  OSTERFELD

Traveled all day with 6th Armored spearhead; came in at night, only houses lining street where armor went through are cleared. Double guard.

Apr. 13  KRETZSCHAU

Battle of Zeitz a mile away; plenty of action here too. Uncover big enemy pocket manning ten 128mm flak guns; two jeeps lost, but kept enemy busy until F company and tanks move in to clean up. 95 prisoners taken, plus guns. Junkers 88 comes down in flames a few yards from CP just at dusk. The AAA boys picked it off.

Apr. 14  DROSSDORF

A night in the field with 6th Armored and entire regiment sprawled over countryside.

Apr. 15  WIEDERAU

Moving through Altenburg, convoy stops here at 0400 for few hours before moving to new regimental sector along Zschopau.

Apr. 16 CLAUSSNITZ

57s in defensive positions with battalions as we halt to await advancing Russians; we dig in, sleep in foxholes ready for counterattack; great excitement over Russians.

Apr. 25-
May  9
PENIG

War's over for us in Germany; hear crashing of last of the Wehrmacht on the radio; showers, and movies again;
V-E Day comes!
